The Ocean Cleanup, the innovative non-profit organization dedicated to ridding the world’s oceans of plastic, has proudly announced the removal of over 2 million kilograms of plastic waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) — a landmark achievement in the global fight against marine pollution.

Using its advanced System 002, also known as “Jenny”, The Ocean Cleanup has reached an unprecedented milestone that demonstrates both the scalability and effectiveness of its ocean-cleaning technology. The plastic extracted includes everything from discarded fishing nets to microplastics, which severely threaten marine biodiversity and ecosystem balance.

“This is a moment of pride not just for us, but for everyone who supports cleaner oceans,” said Chris van der Vorm, spokesperson for The Ocean Cleanup. “Our mission to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040 is now one step closer to reality.”

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch has long been one of the most visible symbols of oceanic plastic pollution. The success of System 002 not only proves the viability of large-scale ocean cleanup but also positions The Ocean Cleanup as a global leader in marine restoration efforts.

In addition to its ocean cleanup operations, the organization has also deployed river Interceptors in multiple countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These solar-powered machines are designed to stop plastic pollution at its source — the world’s most polluted rivers — before it enters the oceans.

Supporters are encouraged to contribute to the cause through donations or by spreading awareness about ocean pollution. The Ocean Cleanup’s work is funded through a mix of donations, sponsorships, and recycled ocean plastic products, including sunglasses made from the collected waste.
